Native American and Sub-Saharan Africa
One thing, I found really interesting about the Native American Culture was the clothing. I found this really interesting because all the clothing was very unique. All of their clothing was hand made. Then they would have to cut and sew the leather into a piece of clothing. The Native Americans would be feathers, animal fur such as ermine or rabbit, porcupine quills, and after the Europeans arrived, glass beads to decorate their clothes. The Native American women generally wore skirts and leggings.

The musical styles and instruments vary from region to region, there are some common forms of musical expressions. By far the most significant instrument in African music is the African drum. It expresses the mood of the people and evokes emotion. The beat of the African drum is considered the "heartbeat of the community" and its rhythm is what holds the dancers together. In certain African communities music is often believed to ward off evil spirits and to pay respects to good spirits, the dead and ancestors.
Native American, song is traditionally the chief means of communicating with the supernatural powers, and music is seldom performed for its own sake. There are three classes of songs- traditional songs, handed down from generation to generation; ceremonial and medicine songs, supposed to be received in dreams; and modern songs, showing the influence of European culture. The music of Native Americans is primarily a vocal art, usually choral, although some nations favor solo singing. The melody is, in general, characterized by a descending melodic figure; its rhythm is irregular.
I also agree that the Native American dress is fascinating! I always enjoy looking a pictures of how the dress can change or what the costume means, it also helps convey the story while they are singing, which is pretty neat I think.
ReplyDeleteJust like the previous comment, I also love the way they dress. It is so unique and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI love the way Native Americans dress too. I admire how they honor and remember their ancestors through their clothing choices. I also found the African drums really interesting, and wrote about them too.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your paragraph about there clothes. That was a route I didn't even think of. I love the way they dress though!
ReplyDeleteI've always found the clothing of the Native Americans to be very interesting and pretty and really enjoyed reading what you wrote about it. Also the idea of music being used to communicate with spirits is also something that I can relate to as some parts of my family believe the same things.
ReplyDeleteYou have some good information here, Tianna. I think you can go deeper, though--you could show us more pictures of Native American costumes, or talk about a specific (rather than general) African drumming topic.
