Wrappin' it up I learned about different cultures hip hop music. Their music is kind of the same and different from our hip hop music. For example, ours is different from theirs because we have a lot of cuss words in it and sometimes you cannot understand the artists because they are rapping to fast. They are the same because all the songs have a amazing beat to it and it makes you want to get up and dance. One thing, I learned about my culture is that costumes are a lot different from India, China, Africa, and Japan. A lot of those costumes have feathers and big head pieces. Also, when those countries dances, it help them remember their language and it keeps their history and traditions alive. When we dance, we just do it for fun. Native American and our culture are kind of the same because when we dance at church, we feel like we are connecting to God. Native Americans feel that way to every time they dance to. One thing, I really liked about thi...

Southeastern and Far Eastern Asia The erhu is one of the most important Chinese instruments. It only have two strings, but it can convey a wide range of emotions. It is played vertically, often resting on the musician's lap. It has no fingerboard, so the player's fingers must hold and vibrate the strings by pressing only against the springs themselves. The erhu bow is already fixed between the two strings, and the bow hair is either pushed forward between the two strings, and the bow hair is either pushed forward or backward to catch a string. The erhu is incredibly expressive, capable of limitating sounds from chirping birds to neighing horses. The dragon dance is the most well-known of all the Chinese dances and is recreated all over the world for Chinese spring festival celebrations. In China, the dragons are actually auspicious, and it is believed that the longe...

Music and Family I interview my mama for this blog. How did you listen to music? What was the technology like? Technology was not like today. We listen to music on walkman, or record players. Have you been to live performances? What was that like? I went to a LL Cool J concert. The music was loud. What sort of music was listened to in your home? We didn't listen to music unless it was on TV shows. What did your parents think about the music you liked? We never really listen to music unless it was on Sunday's and we were getting ready for church. What were some of the first purchases of music when you were younger? I never purchased any music records because I couldn't afford it. I just listen to it on music shows on TV. Did your musical taste change over time? How so? I still listen to Gospel and R&B music Did you have any special music at yo...

Arabic and Indian Cultures One of the main instruments they use in Indian cultures is the Tabla/ Darbuka. We watched a video in class today and I thought it was really cool how they played it. I learned in the article that the deep bass sound is called the drum and the player strikes the head near the center with the length of the fingers and palm and takes hand off head for an open sound. The risk player is the rhythm master and single-handedly controls the speed and dynamic of the entire orchestra. Arabic culture have different types of sacred dances such as the Hadra, the Dhikr, and the Sama. These sacred dances are related to the dominant religion of the Arab world which is the Islam. Also, these dances are practiced collectively during religious festivals like Ramadan. ...

African America and South America The banjos is a popular musical tastes in the African Americans culture. Caribbean created the banjo in the 17th century and carried it to the North America in the 18th century. Banjos rang in Barbados, Antigua, St. Kitts, St. Criox, Suriname, and Haiti in the 1700s and early 1800s. New banjos without drone strings and played with flat picks arose in the 20th century: tenor banjos, tuned like violas, six-strings guitar banjos, mandolin banjos, and plectrum banjos, modeled on the five string banjo without the fifth string. South Americans came by the Natives of South America, the Spanish and the Africans who came to South America as slaves. The region in and around Andes including the countries of Peru Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile have a diverse range of musical traditions. South America music makes up the daily lives of the people. The traditional music of Andes is called...

Music and Gender When I was younger, I never played a instrument because I was more into sports than dance. My sister Rachael played the clarinet in middle school. My sister was the only person in my family that played a instrument. I went to Boiling Springs Middle School in 7th and 8th grade, girls and guys did listen to different genres of music. Some people listen to hip hop, R&B, rap, country, and pop. In middle school, they had a man and female for the band director. I took a music appreciation in 8th grade and we listened to different types of music. Going to high school, the main people playing the drums was guys. In orchestra, there were more females than guys in it. But, chorus it was a mixed of female and guys singing. In music, sometimes gender plays a role in it because some music producers feel like men make it better in the rap game, than female does. In high ...

Native American and Sub-Saharan Africa One thing, I found really interesting about the Native American Culture was the clothing. I found this really interesting because all the clothing was very unique. All of their clothing was hand made. Then they would have to cut and sew the leather into a piece of clothing. The Native Americans would be feathers, animal fur such as ermine or rabbit, porcupine quills, and after the Europeans arrived, glass beads to decorate their clothes. The Native American women generally wore skirts and leggings. The musical styles and instruments vary from region to region, there are some common forms of musical expressions. By far the most significant instrument in African music is the African drum. It expresses the mood of the people and evokes emotion. The beat of the African drum is considered the "heartbeat of the community" and its rhythm is what holds the dancers together. In ...

Music and Religion/ Philosophy Growing up, we have been going to my mama's family church called Star Bethel Baptist Church in Landurm, South Carolina. When I was in the 6 th grade, my family and I started going to a church called Vision of Faith in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Vision of Faith is a non-denomination church, which mean it supports all religions. Star Bethel is really different from Vision of Faith because Star Bethel sing more older songs. The number one song, we sing there is Praise Is What I Do by William Murphy. Vision of Faith’s choir sing more up to date songs. For example, Were Blessed by Fred Hammond, Break Every Chain by Tasha Cobbs, and Its Working by William Murphy. Both of the churches I go to, we sing first than the Pastor would the speak the word. I believe that music is a big part in religion because it put me in a spiritual mood. Especially, when it’s the ...

My Global Music Autobiography This past August, my family and I went on a cruise. We went on the Carnival Breeze boat leaving out of Port Canaveral, Florida. We went to Cozumel, Belize, Mahogany Bay, and Costa Maya. All four places, culture and music were really different. Cozumel, Mexico music was upbeat, and all the members were playing a souvenir guitar. Belize music is like African music because they play on drums and the tempo is really fast. Belize musicians played different styles from hip hop, rock n roll, and dancehall. Mahogany Bay mostly played traditional music on the marimba. The music there was a slow tempo. Costa Maya musicians played with maracas and marimba. Costa Maya dancers’ costumes was like the Native Americans costumes. For the guys, they wear a big feather head piece and have paint all over their bodies. For girls, they wear long dresses or a shirt and a long skirt with a flower head piece. Visiting all those p...
