My Global Music Autobiography
This past August, my family and I went on a cruise. We went on the Carnival Breeze boat leaving out of Port Canaveral, Florida. We went to Cozumel, Belize, Mahogany Bay, and Costa Maya. All four places, culture and music were really different. Cozumel, Mexico music was upbeat, and all the members were playing a souvenir guitar. Belize music is like African music because they play on drums and the tempo is really fast. Belize musicians played different styles from hip hop, rock n roll, and dancehall. Mahogany Bay mostly played traditional music on the marimba. The music there was a slow tempo. Costa Maya musicians played with maracas and marimba. Costa Maya dancers’ costumes was like the Native Americans costumes. For the guys, they wear a big feather head piece and have paint all over their bodies. For girls, they wear long dresses or a shirt and a long skirt with a flower head piece. Visiting all those placed, I learned about their music, culture, and how they live.

I am a dancer, so dance really helps me learn about different musical culture. Two years ago. I was on the competition team at Star makers Dance Company and I would always watch the Irish team. Sometimes the music they dance to was from Ireland. Last year, they went to Ireland and learned about their culture and how they Irish step there.
I grew up in Boiling Springs, South Carolina and I graduated from Boiling Springs High School. Every single year, 2ndsemester Boiling springs High School always have a multicultural assembly and it would represent different countries. For example, China, India, Japan, Mexico, Jamaica, Russia, United States, etc. The first thing they did was each person or group would walk around the whole gym holding the flag. Then, they would sing or dance to represent each country. Also, the students would wear outfits or costumes that represent the country they are dancing for.
I also went on a cruise at the beginning of last summer and it was really great to see the different cultures and their music. That was one of the best parts, I thought about the cruise, was being able to see how those people lived, dressed, danced, etc. The Irish step is also a very interesting and fun dance, I love to watch people doing it.
ReplyDeleteI went to Greenville High-school and we had something similar to the assembly your school did. Ours was more like a festival but each class would take turns going to the gym and they had different stations for different countries and we got to go around the "world" aka the gym and taste food from different countries and read about them, some of the stations had clothing from that country so it was really cool and fun.
ReplyDeleteIt is really cool that you were able to experience all those places through a cruise. One day I hope to go on a cruise. Also it is really cool that your school was able to do that. I would of really enjoyed that if my house did something like that. They did something similar, it was more of a after school event wear most people did not have the opportunity to go because of ride and after school activities situations.
ReplyDeleteGoing on a Cruise is always something that I wanted to do. I enjoyed the pictures that you included from your trip. My school never did anything like a multicultural assembly but it sounds like a lot of fun!
ReplyDeleteI have never been on a cruise. I could have went to Cozumel, Mexico when I graduated high school but decided not to at the last minute. I liked the three pictures you posted of your cruise. You experienced a lot of diverse culture/music with the four places you went.
