Arabic and Indian Cultures

One of the main instruments they use in Indian cultures is the Tabla/ Darbuka. We watched a video in class today and I thought it was really cool how they played it. I learned in the article that the deep bass sound is called the drum and the player strikes the head near the center with the length of the fingers and palm and takes hand off head for an open sound. The risk player is the rhythm master and single-handedly controls the speed and dynamic of the entire orchestra.

Arabic culture have different types of sacred dances such as the Hadra, the Dhikr, and the Sama. These sacred dances are related to the dominant religion of the Arab world which is the Islam. Also, these dances are practiced collectively during religious festivals like Ramadan.

The dress for Indian women devoid of caste, creed, and culture is sari. Sari is a four to nine yard unstitched garment draped in different styles and worn on an upper stitched garment called choli (blouse). In Punjab the traditional dress is Salwar kameez and in Rajasthan it is Gaga Choli or also known as Lehenga. In Kerala an older version of sari called Mundum Neriyathum is the traditional dress, where Mundu forms the lower garment and Neriyathu is the upper garment.

  3. The sama dance was neat. I liked the drum song although I would have preferred a video of them actually playing. The dong was cool though. I think the Saris are very pretty. I'm glad you did them.

  5. The tabla is such a unique instrument. Even though it just looks like an ordinary drum, the complexity of it is just mouth dropping. The amount of hand technique that is needed when playing the tabla just makes me realize I could never do that. It was also neat learning more about the traditional clothing females would wear in India.

  6. The number of sounds the tabla makes even though it appears so simple is so cool! The saris are absolutely gorgeous. I really enjoyed the dance, the way their clothes billowed out as they turned made a really cool effect.

  7. This is all fine, Tianna. You might find it fun to just do a Google Image search for saris--especially wedding ones. They can be really spectacular and gorgeous.
